12.9Changing an asset in use

Chapter 12 · Fixed Assets·1 min read

  • Modify — a change of estimate from a Modify date: Useful life (months), Salvage value, Total cost (a cost correction, which needs a Value adjustment account), Shift (straight line) and Posts (monthly, quarterly, yearly). Depreciation still to come is worked out again from the change date; depreciation already posted stays.

  • ⋯ → Adjust value — set what the asset is worth on a date:

    • lower than its value (damage, obsolescence): a write-down, charged to the Impairment or loss account you choose; the cost stays, the write-down joins accumulated depreciation;
    • higher (a valuation): a write-up, credited to the Revaluation surplus or gain account you choose; the cost rises.

    Depreciation up to the date posts first, then the rest of the life is depreciated from the new value, whatever the method. A value below salvage, a future date, or a date before depreciation already posted is refused.

  • Pause / Resume — suspend depreciation while the asset is out of use; the life is extended by the pause.

  • Transfer — set the Transfer date and the new Location, Department, Cost centre (analytic dimensions) and/or Custodian, with a Reason. Nothing posts: history keeps its old tags and every posting from here on carries the new ones.
